How Does a Yacht Auction Work?
Last updated: 12 August 2026
For years, yachts in Türkiye changed hands behind closed doors, by phone and 'through a friend'. Online auctions change that picture: every boat's details live in a verified listing, every bid is on the record, and the process runs by the same rules for everyone. A model long proven in cars and real estate, now in the Turkish yacht market.
This guide walks a first-timer through the whole process: from registration to bidding, from what the reserve price means to the handover steps after winning.
Three concepts: opening, reserve, increment
Opening bid
The auction's starting figure — it signals where competition begins, not what the boat is worth. A low opening draws more bidders to the table.
Reserve price
The seller's confidential floor. If bidding doesn't reach it, no sale happens — so sellers never fear 'giving it away'. The listing page clearly shows whether the reserve has been met.
Bid increment
The minimum amount each new bid must exceed the last by, stated on the listing. Last-minute bids can trigger a short extension so everyone gets a chance to respond.
The process, step by step
- 01
Register and verify
Bidding requires a free account and email verification. Browsing listings and bid history is open to everyone.
- 02
Study the boat
The listing carries specifications, photos, highlights and the broker's details. Where offered, request an on-site inspection or sea trial — never hesitate to ask before bidding.
- 03
See the full cost
The buyer's premium added on top of your bid is disclosed openly, with its rates, on the bidding screen and the commission page. Build your budget on 'bid + premium'.
- 04
Bid and follow along
Your bid is recorded instantly and visible to all participants. Watch a listing to be notified of new bids; the lead can change hands until the closing minute.
- 05
You won: payment and handover
After the hammer falls, the next steps run with platform support: sale paperwork is issued, a reasonable payment window applies, and contract and transfer stages are completed between the parties.
The "Buy Now" option
On some auction listings the seller sets a 'Buy Now' price: a buyer willing to pay it takes the boat without waiting for the auction to end. It's the fast lane for decided buyers who'd rather skip the contest — these listings appear with their prices in our for-sale showcase.
Frequently asked questions
Does bidding cost anything?
Registration and bidding are free. Only if you win is the buyer's premium — whose rate is disclosed on the listing — added to your bid.
Why can't I see the reserve price?
The reserve stays confidential to protect the negotiating balance — if it were public, nobody would bid past it. What you do see is whether it's been met: the 'reserve met' badge means the current high bid is enough to close the sale.
Can I withdraw a bid?
Bids are binding — the auction's integrity depends on it. That's why we recommend inspecting first and budgeting with the premium included before you bid.
What if the auction doesn't reach the reserve?
No sale takes place and nobody is bound. The seller may relist, or a conversation with the highest bidder can continue through the broker.
